Cold Weather Style: Your Go-To Guide for Winter Layering

Post by Wantable Staff

During the winter months, it can be easy to lose your sense of style when your sole focus is to make sure you stay warm. Trust us, we get it. Current status: wrapped up in a blanket as we speak (er, write). When you have to pile on layer after layer, it feels like a losing battle to put together a cute ensemble underneath if there’s the chance that nobody is going to see it. And, let’s be honest, sometimes the end result looks a little bit like the kid from A Christmas Story. To help you master the art of winter layering, we’ve rounded up a few looks that won’t have you compromising style for warmth (and won’t have you sticking your arms out like a penguin).

winter layering: vest

You’re Simply the Vest

Going outside without a proper jacket during the winter may seem counter-intuitive, but with the right pieces, we promise you’ll stay warm. Start with a plaid button-down as your foundation. The pop of pattern underneath adds personality and the sneak-peek of color will inspire the rest of your look. Next, layer a classic cable knit sweater over your plaid. Not only are they warm, but they add another texture to your ensemble for added dimension. For your final layer, reach for a zip-up vest. With the right accessories (cue chunky scarf and wooly socks), you’ll feel ready to take on the day in this polished outfit.

winter layering: puffer jacket

Puff the Magic Layer

Seriously, we believe a puffer jacket is the most magical winter layer there is. It easily squishes down to become a packable piece, yet somehow keeps you toasty on even the coldest of days. Too good to be true? Nope. It gets even better. The puffer jacket has easily become one of the biggest winter trends of 2018 (and is sure to stick around in 2019) making it a street savvy style that pairs with everything, all while looking effortless and fashion forward. Layer yours over a long sleeve tee and finish the look with a versatile backpack and comfy shoes for a travel-ready ensemble.

winter layering: sweater jacket

Double (Sweater) Vision

What’s better than wearing one sweater at a time? Wearing two. Okay, we don’t actually mean bundling up in layer after layer of cozy sweaters, but we’re all for a textured sweater jacket layered over a chunky knit. A sweater jacket is not only extremely comfortable, but it also has the polished look of a classic moto jacket (#winning). Sneak an additional long sleeve top under your sweater if you need a bit more to bear the cold. Since it won’t be seen, the extra layer won’t detract from your amazing ensemble. Way to go. You. Are. Killin’. It.

winter layering: long cardigan

Take the Long Knit Home

A cardigan is undoubtedly a closet staple thanks to how easy it is to incorporate into your wardrobe on the daily. But if it’s being worn so often, how do you make it feel fresh and new? We’re currently obsessing over cardis with a long length and oversized pockets. When the temperatures are low, we’re super thankful for the extra fabric to keep us warm and a cozy spot for our hands if gloves aren’t quite cutting it. This easy-to-wear piece pairs well with denim for a day out, or fleece-lined leggings for a low-key night in.
